What is Phimosis?
Phimosis is a condition in which the prepuce or the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans penis. It is a common physiological condition that results from inflammatory or traumatic injuries. The most common treatment for phimosis is circumcision. Due to its adverse effects, it is a highly controversial method. Many children refuse to accept circumcision because they do not accept the possibility of having their glans exposed. This is why alternative treatments for phimosis are to be followed.
Circumcision and Preputioplasty
One of the main ways to treat phimosis was circumcision. This approach has led to patients experience postoperative complications and has poor cosmetic results. Also, the general protective and sexual functions of the foreskin are lost and result in irreversible changes in the epithelium of the glans in the patient.
A number of new treatments and approaches fail to gain acceptance by the people due to their often complex and specialized nature of the so-called poor cosmetic results.
On the other hand, Preputioplasty is the operation to alter the shape of the prepuce without having to remove it. Surgeons and doctors have been deemed to have used various versions of this minimally invasive plastic operation with effective results. This plastic operation reserves the foreskin and its functions are intact. The operation even has a quicker and faster recovery period with less pain induced.
The operation is done under local anesthesia. Incisions are made in the foreskin to release the constricting ring of tissues. It is then closed and stitched to increase the girth of the foreskin so that it can retract completely and easily.
Why is it safer?
Doctors consider the foreskin to be an essential part of the glans. It has several functions of its own. In circumcision, the foreskin itself is rendered dysfunctional. In Preputioplasty the foreskin is retained. It is also less painful and the recovery rates are fast and safe.
Side-effects
There is a minimal risk of side effects following the operation. These include redness, mild risks of infection, and very rare hemorrhage. Medical personnel is always available to treat such issues if any. This is a specialized treatment for phimosis and does not harm the patient undergoing it.
