Cryptorchidism or an undescended testicle is a medical condition in which a testicle has failed to move into its proper position in the sack hanging beneath the penis (scrotum) from birth. Typically only 1 testicle is affected. A simple procedure called Laparoscopic orchidopexy is used to repair this condition. Dr Manish Madhav is one of the best pediatric surgeons in Siliguri who has successfully done this procedure on a number of children.

What is an Undescended Testicle Repair?

Typically a baby boy’s testicles develop inside his abdomen and move into the scrotum when he is still inside the womb. But in some cases, movement does not occur. If this doesn’t occur even after he is 1 year old, medical help is necessary to avoid future infertility. Surgery is done to move the undescended testicle into the scrotum. This surgery is known as Laparoscopic orchidopexy or Undescented Testitle Repair.

The surgery

• Your child will be admitted and made to sleep with the help of anaesthesia
• The surgeon will make an incision in the groin and locate the testicle
• The health of the testicle will be examined
• Generally, there is a hernia sac in this area that has to be repaired first
• A second incision is made in the scrotum to make a pocket for the testicle
• After the procedure, both the incisions are stitched up

Home preparation

Like all surgeries, this too has a few rules. The parents are informed about the rules by the nurses a couple of days prior to the operation. Usually, solid foods are avoided few hours before the surgery.
After the surgery
After gaining consciousness your child might behave crankily. You will have to play a major role to help your child keep calm before and after the surgery.

At home after the surgery

You need to be very careful about his diet. You may try a light diet of soft foods on the day he returns from the nursing home after the surgery. From the next day a normal diet can be given. The nurse will provide you with all the instructions. You must call your pediatric surgeons in Siliguri immediately if you notice anything abnormal.
